Dislocated Ankle with Torn Ligaments

Once again I unfortunately injured myself yesterday evening while playing basketball. Previously when I went to Tan Tock Seng Hospital and x-ray my ankle, the injury was not as serious as I thought. But yesterday one was real bad even before I decided to go to the hospital. Upon jumping and landing on my friend’s feet, my ankle rolled over and I heard three sickening cracks. Immediately I screamed in pain. Lying on the ground, I knew it was bad. The pain was the most intense I felt. In fact, it was so bad that I could not move on my ankle and I was crying. Never had I cried while sustaining an injury. But this was really over my pain threshold level.

One of the uncle played basketball with us, took me to the hospital. Together with me was uncle, Louis and Chee Hoong. I was crying in pain while on the way to the hospital. It was only when I reached the hospital, got off the car and took a first look at my ankle. I was literally, “WHAT THE ****!” The size of my ankle was like, balloon?!

Whatever the case, I knew I wanted a painkiller injection so badly. I was started to get spasm over my leg. I did not have to wait long before I got medicated treatment. Uncle and Chee Hoong left. Louis stayed to help me. I went to x-ray. “GOSH!” That guy nurse, who was adjusting my ankle for the x-ray, dropped a piece of the metal on my ankle!!! Instantly I screamed and cried all over again! Seriously never been so painful before! Later I was diagnosed with a dislocated ankle. The doctor went on to say there are three main ligaments (muscles) that hold our ankle in place. I complete torn at least two of the three. Then the painful thought set in – the thought of the doctor pushing my ankle back into place.

For the first time, I was wheeled into another treatment area that I never been before. I was given oxygen through tubes to breathe and all the electrical reading stuff sticking onto my body. The doctor said he will put me to sleep for about 10 minutes and then they will push the ankle back and cast it. While injecting me with the antistatic, he asked me to count to 50. Even before the count of 10, I knocked out. When I woke up, I could feel the nurse finishing up the cast. But I continued to sleep for a while more before waking up.

I started to be very thankful to the nurses and doctor who attended to me. Well besides that nurse who dropped the metal on my ankle. The doctor put a timeline of about 4-6 weeks earliest before I recover. Not sure about when I can have the cast remove. It will be decided after I see the specialist two weeks time. Sigh, while lying on the bed, I was seriously considering about quitting basketball. Even till now, I am still thinking about it. Ever since I started basketball, I sprained both my ankles, sprained few fingers, fractured a finger and now dislocated my ankle. I am quite afraid now. Even if I recover weeks later, I still have more weeks if not months of rehabilitation to go though, and hours of work out in the gym to strengthen my ankle. So it will probably be months later that I can play basketball again, if I choose to play again.

I am disappointed with myself. And I feel completely helpless and useless now being so immobilised. Please pray for me. Please. :’(

Thanks uncle for driving me to the hospital. Thanks Chee Hoong for carrying the heavy me from basketball court to the car. Thanks Louis for accompanying me throughout. Thanks Tan Tock Seng Hospital doctor and nurses who helped me.

Ouch ouch ouch! I feel ya! Something similar happened to me when I slipped on hidden ice 5 years ago. I didn’t get dislocated ankle nor did I tear off a ligament completely, but at least one ligament was nearly torn off!

It hurt so badly I couldn’t even move my foot at all or even touch the ground with a toe without starting to cry. Even having a blanket over my foot at night hurt so bad I couldn’t sleep.

I hate to say it, but don’t be surprised if you’ll feel pain in your ankle for a long long time. I think it took like 10 months before my ankle starting to hurt less often. And still today I can get pain in my ankle if wearing the wrong shoes, and even with training my ankle, my injured ankle remains weaker than my other ankle which has only had really mild injuries to it.

Maybe you should give mini golf a try :D

Hope your ankle is better soon!
