My First (Unofficial) Week at Work

Although my contract will only officially commences on 1 September, I was called by my company to do some relief teaching to gain some experience. So this week, I was asked to go two different schools.

Rulang Primary School
This was a last minute call on Monday when the company needed people to go to this school to help the students with their video editing for the following day’s Robotics competition. Upon reaching the school, I met with another two guys from my company. I was worried since I have no experience video editing. As simple as Microsoft Movie Maker, I have not use before. So when I saw the students, as young as primary 3, that are 9 years old, already knowing how to use the software, I was blown away. I even had to learn from them! But it was a good few hours there. Most memorable was when I helped this student with Powerpoint and she said, “Mr. Bryan, you are a genius!” I laughed at immediately tweeted that on Twitter. And with that comment, I know I am on the right job! To help to educate others! :)

North Vista Secondary School
When I was successful at the company for my interview, the boss already told me he might need me to go this school to help for a week as the trainer is away for army reservist. But instead of going on Monday, I went from Wednesday to Friday. I was very excited to know I was going that school because I have friends there! Especially my god-sister Siew Yi whom I know through Tiffany, yet have not meet her before. And the thoughts of seeing other of my friends there, from a friend to their teacher, really quite epic! I only told Siew Yi that I will be going. Other friends like Jazelbelle, Shi Ting, Tricia, all did not know. Wanted to surprise them all. And when I finally arrived at the school, I told them all. Tricia’s reaction was the most epic! She sent me like 5 SMS in a row!

After 3 days I spent there, I really enjoyed the experience! Very thankful that I was given the chance to go that school. I went into most of the secondary 1 classes to observe another trainer teaching. While I was tasked to take over the duties of this trainer who went to reservist, all his classes were secondary 2. So I seen all the express and normal students. Different class presented me different kind of experience. Had the very quiet class and also the rowdy class. But none gave me any problems. At the end of the day, they got their work done!

There was this particular class, 2N1 I believe, I saw the students tweeting about me. I was quietly beaming with joy in my heart! Again, when I saw those tweets, I once again know that I am on the right job. Not only to just educate others, but to see them being happy with how I taught them. Seriously, the sense of satisfaction is so high in this job! Now even after I completed the short 3 days at the school, I have students following me on Twitter and in Facebook too! With their permissions, here are some tweets that I favourite and will remember forever!

To even know that the students want me to go back, the feeling is just awesome. Teaching goes beyond the classroom right? So when I heard one of the students I taught fell and broke his arm in school yesterday, I decided to visit him. Together with Jazelbelle and Shi Ting, we went to his place. Already there were some of his classmates too. They were presently surprised to see me I guessed. When the student introduced me as their teacher, the mother offered me a chair to sit on. I was so embarrassed! Like seriously! =)

Well just too bad I may not be going back to this school. And probably the students will forget me soon after. But at least for me, I know this is one experience – my first in a secondary school, is one that I will never forget!

Thank you all Vistarians whom I met, for your kind words and encouragement you showered me with! You all left a very deep and lasting impression! An experience I will not forget! Thank you! :)

Happy Birthday Tiffany!

A quick blog to wish Tiffany a very Happy 13th Birthday! Oh yeah 13th! Finally you are no longer 12++++++! Here is a Smurf that her friends bought it for her. I bought her a pink bag from Zinc. But too bad no photo. =D

I met Tiffany for dinner and she treated me to Sakae Sushi! It was not planned that she treats me but she still paid of the meal costing $40. :)

Thank you Tiffany! Happy Birthday! Stay happy always! <3

Popeye’s at Punggol

There is a Popeye’s branch located somewhere in Punggol. Kind of tuck away from the view of many since the location is quite secluded too. That time when I wanted to eat Popeye’s, I did a Google search on its outlets. I was surprised to see one at Punggol. So I decided to visit the place and then share the information with people online. :) So if you are looking for a place away from town and away from Changi Airport where the queues are always very long, go visit this branch at Punggol. But still, try to avoid the weekends because this place is a popular place for people to do prawning from what I understand. :)

If you are looking for a family place to hang out, cycling, jogging, this place is also where you can visit! There are quite a few other restaurants located here. What I saw was a seafood restaurant and a Japanese restaurant.

And finally here are the Singapore flags since it is still in the month of August – Singapore National Day.

Finally I got a Job!

I have been seeking for employment ever since I graduated with a diploma from Temasek Polytechnic about 4 months ago. Initially stage of job hunting was slow for me because back then, I did not know what I want to do yet. Few options crossed my mind but mainly two fields of job I was looking for. First is to be a civil servant with the Singapore Police Force and second was to be along the line of teaching. I applied for the Police Force as a uniform officer but was rejected twice. Even till today, the latest contact I heard from them was “Your application still being process.” That is after I contacted them personally to find out why my online application was rejected. So with any little hopes of still being a Police Officer, that is now gone since I got a job.

My first interview was with the ITE as a Technical Support Officer. However after the interview, I felt it was not what I wanted. So things were stagnated for a while as I was thinking of what to do. Suddenly I saw job advertisements for “IT Trainers”. Immediately it hit me that, that is what I may want. So I applied for IT Trainers in several companies. Only two companies got back to me and both gave me the chance for an interview. Eventually I am now glad to say that I have been given the chance to be a Training Executive with ACP Computer Training School. Ironically, that is the same school that trained me in Microsoft Office back when I was in St. Gabriel’s Secondary School. When I went for interview, I saw one of the staff there whom taught me before. And much to surprised, he still remembered me! It has already been more than 10 years! He was then a trainer, now he holds an Assistant Director position.

A little more on the interview… it went very well on the first interview. I was pretty much myself where I could speak freely. I felt very comfortable unlike the very first interview with ITE. And on the second interview when I was called back today, I was tasked to give a demonstration on how I will conduct a lesson to secondary students. Again everything went very well! I was shocked when the person was even ready to give me a Letter of Employment on the spot. I thought it will be another week of waiting. At times I was flattered with the comments the person gave me. The company is offering me a position whereby I not just be attach to a school for one-year. But I am actually an in-house trainer, where I get to roam different schools to teach. I will get more exposure more quickly.

I will start working officially from September 2011. However I will be attach to a secondary school as soon as next week because of an emergency situation. To be frank, I am still very nervous about it!

So months of job hunting had ended. Thankfully I did not rush into applying for something I may not want to really do because since this is my first job, it will also pave the path for my future. Although it took longer than I wanted, at least I got what I wanted. I want to thank God for giving me directions; my parents for being so patient with me throughout the hunting; my friends who continued to support me in finding a job. Particularly to Don, whom gave me advised and inform me about job openings. And also to Angeline who accompanied me twice for career fairs. :)

I am looking forward to my next phase in life. No more late night chats (“Sorry Tiffany!“), no more friends coming my house daily, change of online gaming habits, no more daily basketball and having to sleep earlier. Just many things will change and I hope to adapt to the working environment quick! :)

Happy 22nd Anniversary City Harvest Church!

Over last weekend services, City Harvest Church celebrated its 22nd Anniversary! Times over the past 14 months have been difficult for the church even before we moved from Singapore Expo to its current location at Singapore Expo. But most of the church members stood by the church and never gave up. Thanks to the grace of God, the church is still moving on strongly, from glory to glory!

Choose LOVE” is the theme for the church since the beginning for 2011. I choose LOVE! You? :)

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust’” (Matthew 5:43-45).

Thank you Pastor Kong, Sun and City Harvest Church for the sacrifices you have made!
